Centralia College receives international award for STP event
Posted: 4/2/2014

ACCED AwardCentralia College was presented with the Outstanding Institutional Achievement Award, recognizing the college for its innovative approach to hosting the Seattle-to-Portland (STP) Bicycle Classic midpoint celebration. The award was presented by the Association of Collegiate Conference and Events Directors-International (ACCED-I), which credited the college for its work with the community, the Cascade Bicycle Club and other sponsors to host the STP riders. Centralia College serves as the official STP midpoint each year supporting more than 10,000 riders. The STP is considered one of the 10 biggest recreational bicycle rides in the country. The college teams with other sponsors to book sleeping accommodations, massages, showers, live entertainment, food services, a beer garden, repair and safe storage for bikes, and other amenities.

“This is certainly an honor that is to be shared by many. It is an award for the community,” Candy Lunke, Centralia College events coordinator, said. She accepted the award during the ACCED-I national conference in March.

“STP wouldn’t be the success it is without support from the Chamber of Commerce, the City of Centralia, the police department, an army of volunteers from the college and the community, and certainly the Cascade Bicycle Club.”

Lunke said that the STP is pretty close to a year-round event in terms of the support needed. “People start requesting information and accommodations for the coming year almost as soon as one year’s event is over,” Lunke said.

The college took over hosting the STP mid-point in 2005 and has expanded the levels of service each year.

The ACCED-I consists of over 1,500 campus professionals who design, market, coordinate and plan conferences and special events on college and university campuses.

“Receiving this award is a tribute to all of the hard work and dedication the STP committee, the sponsors, college staff, and community volunteers put in each year,” Lunke said.
