Centralia College commencement set for June 15
Posted: 6/5/2012 Centralia College will hold its 2012 commencement exercises on Friday, June 15, beginning at 4 p.m. on the college campus. About 640 students this year have applied to receive their degree or certificate and about 250 are expected to take part in the outdoor ceremony.

Although no official records are kept, it is likely that the 640 students who have applied to graduate is a record number.

The ceremony will be held on the field north of the college clocktower, located in the center of campus, and will take place outdoors regardless of weather conditions. There is no limit to the number of guests a graduate may invite.

The commencement reception, hosted by the Associated Students of Centralia College, will be held in the Student Center cafeteria.

The processional, led by senior faculty member Beverley Gestrine, will begin at 3:50 p.m. as students walk from the Health and Wellness Center (gym), west on the Aadland Esplanade and into the seating area. The formal program will begin with welcoming remarks and introductions by Dr. Jim Walton, college president. Walton will also introduce the 2012 Exceptional Faculty Award recipients Nola Ormrod and Judith Aguilar and the Distinguished Alumnus award recipient Angela Meade, a rising star in the world of opera, who will address the students.

Following remarks from Meade, a 1998 Centralia College graduate, vocalists Savannah Freeman, Kristina Knutson, Kara Morris, Ruth Newkirk, and Abbey Potter will perform “Listen” from the motion picture Dreamgirls. The singers will be accompanied by Carolin Auvil, pianist. Dr. Michael Grubiak, retiring vice president of Student Services, will deliver the commencement address.

Richard Jimenez, president of the Associated Students of Centralia College, will give the student address. Following introduction of All-Washington Academic Team members Philip Mawamba and Vasily Kovzun, Grubiak will then announce the winners of the Outstanding Student awards. Those students include: Philip Mawanba, Kristina Knutsen, Richard Jimenez, John Hofman, and Josie Cummings.

Commencement will be broadcast on Cable TV, Channel 3; Stan Giske of Giske Image Design will be on hand to take individual grad photos, which will be available for purchase.

The reception sponsored by Student Life and Involvement Center (SLIC) will follow.
