Study trek to South America set for June 2012
Posted: 11/22/2011 Professors Greg van Alstyne and Laura Yocom, who have become seasoned travelers, will lead a summer travel/study trek covering locales in South America’s Bolivia, Paraguay, and Argentina.

The trip covers 26 days beginning June 18 and it is advisable to check in, get information, and reserve your place as soon as you can.

“Plans are in place for an exciting trip,” said van Alstyne, professor of anthropology. “We’re going to begin at La Paz, the world’s highest capital, and get acclimated. Then we will explore the monumental pre-Incan ruins of Tiwanaku, a UNESCO World Heritage site, look at the fabled silver mountain of Potosi and descend into the underground labyrinth of a working silver mine.”

The trip will take the group through portions of the three countries traveling by train, bus and on foot and will include interaction with the locals and provide insights into the culture of each region.

“Traveling with this faculty team is an exceptional experience,” said Dr. Jim Walton, college president. “Their trips expose travelers to some remarkable sites and their knowledge of South America makes the journey absolutely fascinating.”
