Posted: 10/12/2011
Centralia College will host the ninth Latino Youth Summit on Tuesday, Nov. 8, beginning at 7:30 a.m. It is expected that 500 Latino high school students will attend sessions in the college’s Washington Hall and Science Center.
Breakout sessions cover topics ranging from applying for college admission and searching for financial aid packages to career exploration and managing money. Leaders will also talk about gang involvement and ways to deal with those personal and social pressures.
“The Summit provides Latino youth with information that can change lives,” said Dr. Jim Walton, college president. “The sessions can serve as a road map to success. They are very informative.” Walton complimented the Hispanic Roundtable of South Sound, event sponsor, for an “extraordinary level of service to the Latino youth of this region.”
The Summit will bring together students from Thurston, Lewis, Mason, Pacific, and Grays Harbor counties. The event is co-sponsored by college and university sponsors Centralia College, The Evergreen State College, Saint Martin’s University, and South Puget Sound Community College.
The event is intended to motivate students to reach their goals through higher education and post-secondary training and to provide insights into the many opportunities that are available to Latino youth.
Registration opened Oct. 1 and closes Nov. 1 (or until all available spaces are filled). Students can register at www.hispanicroundtable.org.
