Centralia College commencement set for June 11

Commencement Field, north of Clocktower Centralia College will hold its 2010 commencement exercises on Friday, June 11, beginning at 4 p.m. This year, a record of more than 500 students are eligible to receive their degree or certificate and about 200 will take part in the outdoor ceremony.

The ceremony will be held on the field north of the clock tower located in the center of campus and will take place regardless of the weather. There is no limitation on the number of guests a graduate may invite.

The processional, led by senior faculty member Beverley Gestrine, will begin at 3:50 p.m. as students walk from the Health and Wellness Center, west on the Aadland Esplanade and into the seating area. The formal program will begin with welcoming remarks and introductions by Dr. Jim Walton, college president. Walton will also introduce the 2010 Distinguished Alumnus award recipient and 1969 graduate Dr. Jerris Hedges, a principal researcher in the development of the pacemaker and now the dean of the School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii.

Following remarks from Dr. Hedges, Amelia Tobiason, a Centralia College music student, will sing. Frank DeVaul, a former Centralia College Board of Trustee member and a newspaper publisher, will deliver the commencement address.

Kari Anderson, president of the Associated Students of Centralia College, will give the student address. Dr. Michael Grubiak will then announce the winners of the Outstanding Student award.

Commencement will be broadcast on Cable TV, Channel 3and the college will offer DVDs of commencement for sale. Stan Giske of Giske Image Design will be on hand to take graduation photos and will make photos available for sale following the event.

A reception sponsored by Student Life and Involvement Center (SLIC) will follow in the college cafeteria.
